Mapping the digital world
I could write about the scholarly definition of digital media with supporting articles, boring you to death; or I could tell you what my experience has been as a child growing up in this new digital era. When I use digital media, I feel like a treasure hunter who has discovered an ancient map in a secret compartment.
I live in a world where almost every square inch has been explored by humans. The great adventures of the past did their part and discovered the physical world so the rest of us could live in it. However, this new digital world has been uncovered, and thus it's up to this young generation to go out on their devices and discover it. It's our turn to now fill in the part of the map and build the roads for those after us to follow.
Thus, the best way to build those roads is to use the tools of the digital world, digital media. This tool is vital in transmitting massive amounts of information to a vast audience either to inform or entertain them. Its uses are virtually limitless; ranging from promoting a small business, to publicly addressing the nation, or to righting a wrong of a massive corporation.
I know from first-hand experience that digital media, specifically social media, can connect people from all different walks of life. Not only that but it can also allow people to share their experiences and educate themselves on new ideas. Honesty, that's just a bare minimum that social media can do, there is virtually no cap to what it cant do. However, that very feature is what makes digital media a double-edged sword. Thus, I'm no stranger to the negative parts that come with being an active user of social media. Attempting to map that space means subjecting myself to negative feedback and jeopardizing my privacy.
Which makes me wonder if there is no safety switch when does a tool become a weapon?
